The learning challenge
New field-sales hires may arrive directly from college without healthcare, specialty-practice, or retina-practice experience. Before practicing role-specific product and service conversations, they need to understand who works within a vision or retina practice, what each person does, and how those responsibilities connect throughout the patient’s journey.
This was one learning block within a larger Articulate Rise course. I recognized that the material could easily become a passive description of job titles, so I chose to build a custom interaction that gave the content meaningful context.
The learning experience
Learners select each of four professional roles. While narration explains the selected role’s responsibilities, a realistic day-in-the-life example illustrates how that person’s work fits into the patient journey and clinic workflow.
The intent was to make unfamiliar healthcare roles tangible rather than asking new sales representatives to memorize descriptions. A completion block above the interaction becomes available only after learners have listened to at least 90% of all four audio clips, encouraging exposure to every perspective.
AI-assisted custom development
I intentionally explored AI-assisted coding rather than building another custom interaction in Storyline, both to gain flexibility beyond a standard Rise block and to evaluate a different authoring workflow.
I directed several rounds of design and development, wrote and refined prompts, troubleshot code, tested functionality, and supplied visual design references and cues for the role avatars. I also tested audio playback, navigation, responsive behavior, accessibility, and the experience once embedded within Rise.
Development outcome
Approximately 67% less development time — this AI-assisted interaction took roughly one-third of the time I would normally expect for a comparable custom Storyline interaction, based on my prior development experience. This is a practitioner comparison, not a controlled benchmark.
How it fits the broader course
The full course is designed to build from role exploration to knowledge checks and ultimately to opportunities for learners to practice tailoring product or service pitches to different clinical professionals. The specific sales-practice activities are still being designed.
Project status: Custom interaction developed, tested, and embedded in Rise; the broader course has not yet launched. Learner comprehension, job performance, and business outcomes therefore have not yet been measured.
